SJOG recognizes that plagiarism is not acceptable and therefore establishes the following policy, specifying the actions taken when plagiarism is identified by anti-plagiarism software in a submitted manuscript. Every submission must be original, unpublished, and not under consideration for publication elsewhere.
Plagiarism is the copying of another person’s text or ideas and presenting the copied material as one’s own. Authors must both delineate (separate and identify) copied text and credit (cite) its source. This applies regardless of the source, language, format, or authorship of the copied material, and includes self-plagiarism.
Similarity Screening
Acceptance Threshold
As a guide, the overall similarity index should be below 20%, with no single source exceeding 5%, excluding the reference list and properly quoted material. The index is interpreted with editorial judgement, since a high score may arise from legitimate matches (for example, standardised methods, validated instruments, or common obstetric and gynecologic terminology).
Graduated Actions
| Level | Definition | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Minor | A short sentence or paragraph copied from another source, without significant data or ideas taken. | Warning; authors asked to revise and cite the source properly. |
| Substantial | A significant portion of another work copied, or data/ideas reused without attribution. | Manuscript rejected; authors notified; institution may be informed. |
| Severe | Extensive copying, or copying of data/results presented as original. | Immediate rejection; prohibition from future submission; notification of the authors’ institution(s). |
