Plagiarism Policy
Originality & similarity screening

Definition

Plagiarism is the use of another’s ideas, words, data, or other material without appropriate acknowledgement, as well as the reuse of one’s own previously published work without disclosure (self-plagiarism). SJN regards plagiarism in any form as a serious breach of publication ethics.

Screening & Acceptance Threshold

Every submission is screened with similarity-detection software before and during review. Manuscripts showing an unacceptable level of overlap, or any evidence of plagiarism, are returned or rejected. A high similarity index, or substantial overlap with a single source, will halt processing regardless of the overall percentage.

Handling of Detected Plagiarism (COPE-aligned)

LevelDescriptionAction
MinorA short passage copied without significant data or ideasAuthors warned; asked to revise and cite the sources correctly
IntermediateSignificant text, data, or ideas used without proper attributionManuscript rejected; authors’ institution may be notified
SevereSubstantial copying or reuse of another’s data, ideas, or words; or self-plagiarism of a large portionManuscript rejected/retracted; authors may be barred from submitting; institution and funders notified
Cases are handled following the COPE flowcharts. Where plagiarism is identified after publication, SJN issues a correction or retraction with a clear, citable public record.
